I know it may be challenging to follow a healthy low-carb diet, especially if you are new to it. I hope this comprehensive list of keto-friendly foods will help you make the right choices, whether your goal is to lose weight or manage a health condition such as type 2 diabetes, insulin resistance, Parkinson’s, Alzheimer’s, epilepsy and even cancer.

However, you have to be careful how much of these keto nuts you eat. Too much can lead to selenium toxicity which causes nausea, vomiting, and brittle hair and nails. Besides selenium, Brazil nuts can help you reach your macros because they're almost 70% fat. They contain the perfect balance of both PUFA and MUFA fats. Studies on these keto nuts show that they're especially notable as antioxidant foods, protecting against cancer [11].

Sea vegetables are another rich source of green-nutrition and are a very low carb vegetable. Seaweed is also a good source of iodine, essential for thyroid hormone production. Used in sheets it can make a great practical alternative to bread, rolled into a tube like sandwich. Algae is also a potent antioxidant protects us from various diseases. Sea vegetables are anti-cancer, anti-coagulant (reducing the risk of stroke) and antioxidant. You can eat plenty of seaweed on keto and it’s also high in sea salt.

If you can’t have cheese on clean keto, at least you can have bacon? Well, sort of. Traditional bacon contains those pesky sulfites from before, along with nitrates (aka another carcinogen), Hunnes says. One recent study found a link between nitrate consumption and mania by looking at both humans and rats.[12] And nitrates are a common migraine trigger — one study found that they can actually alter our oral bacteria, which is what can set off the migraines. Hi Sarah, Sorry, I don’t have that detail of granularity. The chart is designed to show equivalents if someone has a different type of sweetener, but is not meant to be a way to combine sweeteners. I suppose you could try doing a conversion for half the sweetener amount needed in the recipe, then use half of the original and half of the conversion. I just can’t say for sure if the results would be the same, and it would depend on the recipe. For cheesecake filling it would probably be fine as long as you use either a powdered sweetener (as in powdered erythritol or monk fruit) or super concentrated liquid or powder (as in pure stevia powder/liquid).
Just when you thought your midnight-snacking of shredded cheese could be considered a healthy habit thanks to keto… (You kid, you knew it was too good to be true all along.) Cheese in general is not recommended on clean keto or the Bulletproof Diet. Dairy proteins are among the worst offenders for allergies and inflammation. If your body doesn’t like casein, your immune system will attack every time you eat it. The reaction may be subtle and chronic, or it could trigger an autoimmune flare-up and other inflammatory conditions. Cheese also harbors tons of toxic mold from the animal’s diet.[11]

Additionally, a ketogenic diet can improve your energy, cognitive acceleration and overall daily performance.  Most people feel their best when in a state of mild-ketosis.  One of the big challenges, is that most people have been raised on higher carb comfort foods.  So rather than focusing on what foods you will miss, shift your energy to all the great foods you can enjoy.  Here are 22 ketogenic foods that you will LOVE!
Natural fat, high-fat sauces – Most of the calories on a keto diet should come from fat. You’ll likely get much of it from natural sources like meat, fish, eggs etc. But also use fat in cooking, like butter or coconut fat, and add plenty of olive oil to salads etc. You can also eat delicious high-fat sauces including Bearnaise sauce etc., or garlic butter (recipes).
This Greek-inspired dish has all the flavors of lemon, garlic, and oregano, giving the meat a lovely fresh taste, and the coconut yogurt dipping sauce just sets it off so well. This recipe would be a good one to try if you have friends round for a barbecue, as the flavors of the chicken are really amazing! Try to cut the chicken into even strips as that can make sure it cooks evenly on the grill.
Hi Kathy, Just confirming that even pure erythritol doesn’t work for you? Often times it’s other things in erythritol blends that cause issues, like oligosaccharides, for example. Unfortunately I haven’t tested this recipe without a powdered sweetener, so if you try something super concentrated like stevia, I’m not sure how it would work out. Please let me know how it goes if you try!
I’ve been making keto “Infusion water”. One lemon, cucumber 1/2 English type, 3 celery, one inch ginger, all sliced thin. Add to glass wide mouthed jar. Pour distilled water over everything. Pour off water into glass for a refreshing drink. Add cayenne if you like it. Add more water and share with family and friends, lol. Keep adding water and refrigerate for around twenty-four hours. Start again… this fresh water should make you feel noticeably energized…pay attention to your body!
Hi Stephanie, Unfortunately coconut flour doesn’t work as a 1:1 replacement for almond flour, due to it’s moisture absorbing properties. So, you’d need a different crust if you want to use coconut flour. You could use the crust from my pina colada cheesecake cupcakes instead – just follow the instructions from that recipe for the crust, but press into the springform pan instead of cupcake liners. From there you can follow this regular cheesecake recipe the same way as written. Hope that helps!

How much is “enough protein,” and how does that translate into actual meat on your plate? U.S. dietary guidelines prescribe protein based on body weight (a minimum of 0.36 grams per pound of body weight, if you want to bust out your calculator). But that’s the minimum necessary to stay alive and prevent deficiency, not the right amount for optimal health or weight loss. The classic ketogenic diet has a ratio of 4:1 fat grams:(protein grams + carb grams), meaning that the diet would be less than 20% protein by weight (grams) and 10% protein by calories. People who want to put on muscle – or people who want to lose weight more easily – often eat closer to 30% protein by calories, which is probably fine and maybe even helpful for keto weight loss, since protein helps suppress hunger. It’s perfectly fine to eat on the low end – keto isn’t necessarily a high-protein diet – but there’s a big range of totally reasonable options.

The problem with some meats when you’re on Keto is that they are too lean. That means, even though it’s low in carbs, some meat has too much protein and not enough fat. That doesn’t mean you can’t have those meats. It just means you’ll need to be careful not to go over your protein macro. And if there isn’t enough fat in the meat you eat, then you will want to pick up some extra, healthy fat somewhere else.
Whether you munch on them on their own or pair them with melt-in-your-mouth Havarti, Kalamata olives are one of our go-to snacks both on and off keto. Six plump olives boast just 35 calories and 130 milligrams of sodium, a low count to keep bloating at bay. Most of the fat content in olives is monounsaturated, and more specifically oleic acid, which has been linked to anti-inflammatory and heart-protective benefits.
While this roasted seaweed snack doesn’t pack in as much fat as many of the other picks on our list, we think it’s worth adding to your keto shopping cart. It’s low in calories, sodium, and has an impressive zero net carbs thanks to the fiber. Plus, the dried sea veggie is filled with fat-soluble vitamins and minerals such as iron, manganese, and copper to maintain overall health.
It only takes a few seconds to whip up a tuna salad or a couple minutes to pan fry a steak. If you stick with the basics, meat and veggies, it’s no different than fixing any other type of meal at home. Don’t overcomplicate it with keto versions of your old favorites – those are the things that turn into projects instead of dinner. Maybe basic-bland can get you started… once you’re comfortable with the change you can take more on? Maybe your tastes will change after you aren’t eating all the processed food? You’ve got to make it work for you.
These taste so freaking good. I used this filling and the crust/baking directions from the pina colada cheesecake cupcake recipe. The only thing I would change is to make sure to include directions to beat the eggs into the cream cheese/sweetener mixture on the lowest speed to avoid getting air bubbles in there!!! I beat them too fast and ended up with cheesecakes that puffed way up in the oven and the deflated when they cooled and it made the texture a little off. Planning on making them again sometime because they seriously taste amazing and were pretty easy, just sucks because I was making these for graduation and made 2.5 dozen and none turned out right 🙁
