The consensus is that the Carbs shown on nutritional labels for yogurt containers are extremely misleading. The fermentation process brought on by the active cultures in yogurt, consume roughly half of the stated carbs. The nutritional labeling system REQUIRES food manufacturers to build the label based on the pre-cooking (or fermenting in this case) stage of the food.


This is one area where full keto and Bulletproof differ. Except for coconut, all nuts and legumes are suspect on the Bulletproof Diet and should be limited. All expose you to high amounts of omega-6s, inflammatory oxidized fats, mold toxins, and phytates (plant anti-nutrients). If you can’t have cheese on clean keto, at least you can have bacon? Well, sort of. Traditional bacon contains those pesky sulfites from before, along with nitrates (aka another carcinogen), Hunnes says. One recent study found a link between nitrate consumption and mania by looking at both humans and rats.[12] And nitrates are a common migraine trigger — one study found that they can actually alter our oral bacteria, which is what can set off the migraines. Sea vegetables are another rich source of green-nutrition and are a very low carb vegetable. Seaweed is also a good source of iodine, essential for thyroid hormone production. Used in sheets it can make a great practical alternative to bread, rolled into a tube like sandwich. Algae is also a potent antioxidant protects us from various diseases. Sea vegetables are anti-cancer, anti-coagulant (reducing the risk of stroke) and antioxidant. You can eat plenty of seaweed on keto and it’s also high in sea salt.
Polyphenols are a special group of phytochemicals – plant components with antioxidant properties. There are thousands of polyphenol compounds in fruits and vegetables, and examples include flavonoids, coumarins, lignans, tannic acid. By including fruit into your keto diet, you can reap some of the many health benefits of polyphenols like a reduced risk of type II diabetes and cardiovascular disease [4].

Key Nutrient: Brazil nuts are extremely high in selenium. In fact, one Brazil nut provides more than 130% of your daily requirement for selenium, a mineral involved in maintaining healthy thyroid function, among other things. However, in order to avoid potentially toxic levels of selenium, it's best to limit your intake to a few Brazil nuts per day.


Although excellent sources of fat, nuts add up quickly in protein and carbs, and are often inflammatory. Snack on fattier nuts such as macadamia nuts and pecans, but limit those high in inflammatory omega-6s, like peanuts and sunflower seeds. Only use nut flours (almond, coconut) in moderation, as they are packed with protein. To stay in ketosis, limit high-carb nuts like cashews, pistachios and chestnuts, and avoid most beans.

Kroger had the only decent low-carb yogurt, but our local one has shut down (along with many others). Went online in desperation, found your recipe, had the ingredients at hand, gave it a try–wonderful! Threw some frozen blueberries in with it–even better! I won’t go back to store-bought yogurt. This is a great article!! I love pecans, walnuts, macadamia and Brazil nuts. Moderation is definitely the key. I don't think I could ever cut them out completely, and so glad this article backs up my thoughts about them. It's also nice to hear a good word about flax! For a few months now I've read nothing but bad about it and though I have some I've avoided using it. Now I think I will start adding it back in! Thanks for all this research!!

Hi do you boil the heavy whipping cream 1st? I make SCD yogurt. specific carbohydrate diet.. and I add my own cultures which requires you to 1st boil the milk To kill off any bad bacterias then let it cool and add powdered enzymes then let it ferment for 24 hours so the enzymes can eat all the lactose making it lactose free. I was thinking of using whipping cream instead of milk but wasn’t sure about the boiling process?

These taste so freaking good. I used this filling and the crust/baking directions from the pina colada cheesecake cupcake recipe. The only thing I would change is to make sure to include directions to beat the eggs into the cream cheese/sweetener mixture on the lowest speed to avoid getting air bubbles in there!!! I beat them too fast and ended up with cheesecakes that puffed way up in the oven and the deflated when they cooled and it made the texture a little off. Planning on making them again sometime because they seriously taste amazing and were pretty easy, just sucks because I was making these for graduation and made 2.5 dozen and none turned out right 🙁

Hi Dorothy, The ingredients don’t scale perfectly to a 6-inch pie, but can be pretty close. If you enter “10” in the box that lists the number of servings, it will convert the amounts for you. Some amounts turn out a little odd (like 1.88 eggs), so with those it should be ok to round up. The baking time will need to decrease with a smaller cheesecake, as well.

Thank you, Ashlee! To keep the texture the same, use lemon zest or lemon extract. Lemon juice isn’t potent enough and you’d need so much that the texture would change. I haven’t tested the amount of lemon zest or extract yet, but I’d try about a tablespoon of zest or 1 1/2 tsp of extract. You can add it before adding the eggs and taste (since there are no raw ingredients before adding eggs). Just keep in mind that at that stage you’ll want it more potent than the end result, since the eggs will dilute it a little. Let me know how it goes!
Hi Maya! Will be trying this recipe for my husband’s birthday this weekend. I’m new to keto and my husband is supporting me with cutting out sugar as much as he can. I just have 1 question – in the nutrition facts, you mentioned net carbs 5g, fiber 1g and sugar 2g. What is the difference between net carbs and sugar? I thought the sugar count is a part of total carbs subtracting the fiber which would mean the sugar count is equal to the net carbs? Hope you can explain further! Thank you 🙂
