If you have a cow’s milk intolerance, you might find goat’s milk can be a good replacement as it is much easier to digest and won’t upset your system. This is a great recipe if you fancy trying goat’s milk yogurt and it can be used in all the ways you would use other yogurts. You will find that this one is rather thin, so if you like your yogurt thicker, strain the mixture through a cloth and the result will be much better.
Instead of getting that store-bought can of frosting that’s filled with sugar, food coloring, and trans fats, make your own! Cream cheese and butter come together perfectly to create a rich and creamy frosting that makes all of your cakes taste better. If you want an example of a great cream cheese frosting (with added fruit compote), check out our Low Carb Spice Cakes with Cream Cheese Frosting.
Where does nutrition info come from? Nutrition facts are provided as a courtesy, sourced from the USDA Food Database. You can find individual ingredient carb counts we use in the Low Carb & Keto Food List. Carb count excludes sugar alcohols. Net carb count excludes both fiber and sugar alcohols, because these do not affect blood sugar in most people. We try to be accurate, but feel free to make your own calculations.
Once the mixture is properly mixed, cover with a small section of cheesecloth or any other air permitting material. This will let the bacteria inside the jar to release carbon dioxide as it ferments the naturally occurring sugars in the mixture. If you use the lid that comes with the jar and its airtight, be prepared for a sonic boom when you open the container because the fermentation process will pressurize the contents inside. – Trust me, it’s not fun!.
Spurred by demands from a fat-phobic public, the ’80s saw the rise of new low-fat snacks, which tended to cover the spread with added sugar. SnackWell’s cookies, an icon of this age, filled up the cupboards of dieting aunts. These paired great with low- or nonfat milk, the combined sales of which surpassed whole milk for the first time ever in 1988. Between 1980 and 2014, sales of whole milk decreased 45 percent as sales of 2 percent and skim rose 7 percent and 9 percent, respectively.
Most fruits are high in carbs and a natural source of sugar. This means that delicious, sweet fruits like mangoes, pomegranates, lychee, pears, kiwi, bananas and even apples may not make great choices if you're trying to stick with a ketogenic diet. Not being able to have apples on the keto diet may surprise you — after all, apples have such a good reputation for being healthy!
Keto nuts and seeds, on the other hand, are rich in fat and low in carbs, having a minimal impact on blood glucose. In fact, research shows that eating these foods has an anti-diabetic effect [1]. This effect does not come solely from the high fat content of nuts and seeds. Fiber also helps as it feeds good gut bacteria which then supports normal metabolism functioning. Their high antioxidant content also helps lower inflammation in the body and inflammation is a key driver of diabetes.

The ideal keto fruit is a high-fat, low-carb fruit. The two obvious choices here are coconut and avocado. Looking at ketogenic diet plans, you'll always see fat — that's the whole point of the diet, after all. However, it's important to diversify your fats. Don't always opt for milk products; instead, try swapping your whole milk for coconut milk or trading your butter for avocado butter.
These taste so freaking good. I used this filling and the crust/baking directions from the pina colada cheesecake cupcake recipe. The only thing I would change is to make sure to include directions to beat the eggs into the cream cheese/sweetener mixture on the lowest speed to avoid getting air bubbles in there!!! I beat them too fast and ended up with cheesecakes that puffed way up in the oven and the deflated when they cooled and it made the texture a little off. Planning on making them again sometime because they seriously taste amazing and were pretty easy, just sucks because I was making these for graduation and made 2.5 dozen and none turned out right 🙁

That's why keto die-hards are notorious for eating plenty of bacon and cheese. However, if you're tired of eating the same bunless cheeseburger every night, there are plenty of meat-based fat sources you likely haven't tried. Get creative and make one of these five fatty cuts of meat for dinner. Of course, it's best not to go overboard and eat these for every meal–most dietitians recommend getting healthy fats from plant-based sources like nuts and avocado.
Thank you, Patricia! Typically dropping is due to sudden temperature changes, or from over mixing. Make sure the mixer is at low speed. After baking, let it gradually cool on the counter. If you really want it to be perfect looking, you can try a water bath to encourage even more gradual temperature changes, but for me that’s usually more hassle than it’s worth.
Chia seeds are 40% carbohydrates, mostly is in the form of dietary fiber. Fiber is an indigestible carb that does not impact blood sugar or ketone production. It's important for normal bowel movements and gut health in general. Chia is also 30% fat, most of which is omega-3 fatty acids (65%). This makes chia seeds a great source of this essential fatty acid.

This was my first time ever making cheesecake, so I was intimidated by the idea of making one without traditional ingredients for crust..etc. However, this recipe was extremely simple to follow and the ingredients weren’t hard to find. I followed each step to a T and my cheesecake came out perfectly! It tasted delicious and I cant wait to let everyone, (including non keto eaters) taste this perfect recipe! I’ll be saving this recipe forever!!
MCT stands for medium-chain triglycerides. These are unique types of saturated fats that studies show your body can easily turn into ketones [12]. MCT oil is a supplement that is a purified source of these fats. Because MCTs don't require bile and enzymes for digestion, they get easily absorbed in your small intestine and they reach the liver quickly where they're turned into ketones.

Nutrition – If you eat nuts and seeds daily, you minimize your risk of nutrient deficiencies. These foods are, as already explained, nutritional powerhouses. Fat makes up a big portion of the macros in nuts, with most having over 70% of fat per measure of weight. The quality of the fats in nuts is also worth noting as most a rich in monounsaturated fatty acids [2].
Hi Liz, As far as the Swerve goes, most online calculators don’t subtract sugar alcohols when showing net carbs, so that may be the issue. Regarding the butter, all butter is keto approved (as long as it’s real butter). 🙂 If you calculated by hand, then let me know which ingredient is showing a lot of carbs for you and I can help determine what was off. The few net carbs in the recipe come from almond flour and cream cheese. The brands of pantry ingredients I use are linked in the recipe card (pink links). I use Kerrygold for the butter and Philadelphia for the cream cheese.
Instead of adding sugar to your coffee, you can put a few drops of stevia in there to sweeten it up. Stevia is a great sweetener and won’t increase your blood sugar levels – so it’s a perfect way to sweeten your morning coffee. If you find stevia to have a bitter aftertaste, erythritol and monk fruit extract are two other keto-friendly sweeteners worth trying.
However, the need to eliminate carbohydrate-rich foods does not mean that all fruits must be removed from your daily diet. In fact, several high-fat, low-carb fruits, like coconut and avocado, are staples of the ketogenic diet. Ultimately, finding good keto fruits just involves identifying fruits with low carb content, so that you can consume healthy, sweet foods without affecting ketosis.
Lemons are going to help your body become better at absorbing iron which, in turn, will allow your muscles to become stronger and possibly prevent osteoporosis when you are older. Healthy bones are going to help your joints stay healthier as well. Everything is connected in your body and when you improve one thing, you are only helping something else.
Thank you so much for the above information. Really very helpful for people like me. Just started Keto 3 weeks ago, I still get confused on my protein consumption and what vegetables have high carb content. This is by far the best “diet” I’ve been on as I feel I can go on forever and I’m not missing anything I actually eat what I want. I eat when I’m hungry and stop when I’m full, just extra cautious what I put in my body.

Certain types of dairy can be enjoyed on the keto diet! Butter, cheese, full fat yogurts and heavy cream – this is not your typical diet fare! When eating dairy, you will generally want to choose ingredients that have a lower amount of lactose. Lactose is a sugar that will spike your blood sugar. You will want to stay away from milk, as it is full of lactose (aka sugar)! And of course, if you have lactose intolerance you should avoid dairy altogether.

Who doesn’t love the creamy combination of chocolate and peanut butter? In the Jones house we go nutzo for anything chocolate and anything peanut butter. Now you can enjoy this delicious combination and stay in ketosis. That’s a huge win! Again, cottage cheese is the star of the show here and protein powder and splenda add a chocolaty flavor and sweeten. Pro tip: Choose a keto protein powder for enhanced benefits.
This is the MOST AMAZING recipe I’ve found to date! I’ve made it many times and most of the time, my guests don’t believe me when I tell them it’s low carb and sugar free. I especially love making it for my mother who is diabetic. And my sister, who doesn’t like cheesecake at all, loves this one. Truly an amazing and satisfying recipe. And so easy! Thank you so much!
FULL DISCLOSURE - the original recipe does not have the added unflavored gelatin, but it set too soft for me. Also, it did not add the sweetener over the jello sweetening, but the sour cream "bite" was off-putting for me (I'm not a fan of it straight at all), so adding that little bit of sweetness took the edge off, and it is still far less sweet than my old sweets! And this works fabulously for those who can't afford other fats sources - or who just need an awesome satisfying snack with staying power that kills the sweet tooth, but without all the sugar!
Milk (only small amounts of raw, full-fat milk is allowed). Milk is not recommended for several reasons. Firstly, all the dairy products, milk is difficult to digest, as it lacks the "good" bacteria (eliminated through pasteurization) and may even contain hormones. Secondly, it is quite high in carbs (4-5 grams of carbs per 100 ml). For coffee and tea, replace milk with cream in reasonable amounts. You may have a small amount of raw milk but be aware of the extra carbs. Lastly, farmers in the United States use genetically engineered bovine growth hormone (rBGH). rBGH is injected to dairy cows to increase milk production. Opt for full-fat dairy labeled “NO rBGH”.

Hi Jordan – thank you for reaching out. We have a ton of articles on here (https://theketoqueens.com/category/blog/) that you may find helpful. We also wrote a post about starting a keto diet (https://theketoqueens.com/keto-diet/), then we have a keto course that walks you step by step to starting a keto diet (under shop), and if you need individual keto coaching I do that on my other website LaraClevenger.com. Please let us know if you can help in any way.
However, as easy as this may sound, the key to keeping your body in ketosis is to constantly pack your meals with fatty eats and stay as far away from carbs as you possibly can, which can get quite demanding—especially if you’re not prepared. To help you maintain this ethereal fat-burning state, we’ve rounded up 14 snacks you can grab on-the-go. These eats will keep you satiated with healthy fats and boast no more than five grams of net carbs.
Whether you’re whipping them into a recipe or snacking on a handful of them raw, blackberries can make a great addition to your keto meal plan. A ½-cup serving doesn’t contain much fat (less than ½ g) but is also low in net carbs, with just 3.1 g. The same serving size offers 3.8 g of fiber (15.2 percent DV) and 3.5 g of sugar. Blackberries also provide potassium, with 117 mg (2.5 percent DV) per ½-cup serving. It has 15.1 mg of vitamin C (25.2 percent DV) and 14.3 mg of vitamin K (17.9 percent DV). This fruit is also a great snack for weight loss, containing about 31 cal per ½ cup.

This recipe gives you one of the creamiest smoothies ever because it uses low-carb coconut yogurt and avocado. The flavor of the chocolate comes through really well, so this Keto drink would go down really well with the younger members of the family and can be a great way to get them off to a good start in the morning. The avocado adds healthy fats to the smoothie, so you will find it is filling too!
Once the cream or milk has reached its prime temperature (42C) – (108F) pour it into a container, add the probiotic tablet powder to the mixture and stir it with a sterilized metal spoon (sterilized by pouring very hot water over it). As you can see, I’m using a large glass container, which will fit the dairy version perfectly but doesn’t quite touch the sides with the coconut milk version :-).
Low carb vegetables that are technically fruits. Tomatoes, tomatillos, avocados, pretty much any seed bearing vegetable… those “veggies” are fruits, botanically speaking. I’m not here to debate what a fruit or veggie is, but I won’t lie that it irks me just a little when I see people preach that you “can’t eat fruit on the keto diet” while diving face first into a pile of avocados or zucchini noodles. Maybe it’s the biologist in me (or maybe I’m just “that guy”), but you can and probably already are eating fruit on the keto diet.
If you’re one of those people who can’t seem to put anything too hearty down early in the morning but is still interested in getting fat burning energy, then look no further. This creamy mint matcha shake is the drinkable breakfast you’ve been searching for. Matcha is insane- for tons of reasons – you can read about the many benefits here. And if you like mint and you like creamy—get out your blender.

There are different ways to include nuts and seeds into your daily meals. Variety is key to keep you eating these foods on a daily basis. That way, you’ll also meet your daily macros and stay healthy along the way. Another great thing about these foods that they’re also an excellent source of fiber. With all that said, add these nuts and seeds to your keto shopping list today.
I know I’m really late with this, but the rising in the oven/falling after being taken out of the oven is because the air in the batter is hot, resulting in an inflated-looking cheesecake. After it’s taken out of the oven, the cheesecake cools and the air in it is no longer hot so it can’t keep the cheesecake inflated. There’s not much you can do to avoid this, much like a souffle. The only thing I would think you can do to keep it from falling too much is to basically make a merengue with the egg whites instead of incorporating them at first (just put the egg yolks into the batter at the egg-adding stage) and then fold in the egg whites in thirds. This will change the texture of the cheesecake into something more fluffy like a Japanese-style cheesecake, though.
With only 3.54 grams of carbs per 100 grams, you’re getting a solid low-carb, high protein/high fat option, perfect for your keto lifestyle. Cottage cheese is stocked with vitamins and nutrients too—calcium, phosphorous, selenium, riboflavin, potassium, zinc, B12 and B6! Because cottage cheese is overflowing with all this good stuff, the health benefits are plentiful. There’s a reason it’s in our Ultimate Keto Diet Guide Guide.

Truly amazed after trying dozens of recipes for bread, cake, etc. with almond flour and all turned to sawdust or icky, hard yuk! All the wasted expensive ingredients, I have finally hit gold with this recipe exactly as written! We have been Primal and off bread for about 4 years, but always salivating when offered fresh bread or bagel! This is a great recipe and thank you for sharing!

Maca is a kind of turnip from Peru. It is nicknamed “nature’s Viagra” for its libido boosting properties. Although it contains 60% NET carbs you only need a teaspoonful to give you a sweet tasting boost. A few grams of this superfood won’t take you out of ketosis. It’s adaptogenic, meaning it will boost your body, mind and mojo in multiple ways. Aloe Vera is a species of cactus related to the lily flower. It is antimicrobial, antibacterial and antifungal. It heals the gut and is used to successfully reduce the effects of radiation and stabilize cancerous tumors. It is a bit slimy to eat but can be added to salads and shakes and has zero carbs. This is a superhero in the plant kingdom and its zero carb status makes it perfect for keto.
In prospective cohort studies, increased nut intake has been associated with a reduced risk of cardiovascular disease,[8] type 2 diabetes mellitus,[9][10] metabolic syndrome,[11] colon cancer,[12] hypertension,[13] gallstone disease,[14] diverticulitis,[15] and death from inflammatory diseases.[16] Overall, nuts and seeds are great foods to promote overall health and well-being in both the short and long-term!
So that spoon you are using looks rather large, I’m not sure I have one that large, much less 6 of them. Yo do hang them individually, right? Also I’m not sure I’ll have the counter space or cups to do 6 separately… am I understanding this right? Are there other ideas for the hanging part? Have you tried any taco shell molds or the racks? Just curious if these would work also?
