The next time you need to change up your keto breakfast ideas, give this recipe a try. It’s so simple to make and is also extremely versatile. Easily change the creamy, tangy flavor by adding different extracts, spices like cinnamon or a few berries blended in. Make one large batch and divide them into different flavors, serve on its own, or top your favorite keto pancakes with it.
Other popular citrus fruits, like oranges, grapefruit and tangerines, have higher sugar content. Oranges, for example, have about 17 grams of sugar and 21.3 grams of total carbs in each fruit. While this doesn't mean you can't have a small piece of fruit like this on occasion, too much will easily knock you out of ketosis and interfere with your ketogenic diet.
FULL DISCLOSURE - the original recipe does not have the added unflavored gelatin, but it set too soft for me. Also, it did not add the sweetener over the jello sweetening, but the sour cream "bite" was off-putting for me (I'm not a fan of it straight at all), so adding that little bit of sweetness took the edge off, and it is still far less sweet than my old sweets! And this works fabulously for those who can't afford other fats sources - or who just need an awesome satisfying snack with staying power that kills the sweet tooth, but without all the sugar!

I make this crustless as I didn’t have the ingredients the first time I made it. Everyone loved it so much I always make it crustless. Lol. I also ran out of powdered swerve the last two times I made it, so my ratio is 1 cup powdered swerve and 1/4 cup granulated. It actually tastes better and has great texture. I served this to my husbands family and told them it was keto so if they didn’t like it they didn’t have to eat it. I had them all love it and go back for seconds! Been keto for 14 weeks and make this about every two weeks!
I stay away from any Greek yogurt with less than 10 % m.f. Lots of brands out there with +10% m.f., like Greek god, astro, Olympic, etc. If you can't find it in the grocery store, here's a tip I learned from a friend: get the highest percentage m.f. Greek yogurt you can find, then put it in a salad spinner and draw as much water out. The yogurt water is full of lactose (milk sugar). You will be left with a thicker yogurt that contains more fat (and protein) per portion, and less carbohydrates. You can then add heavy cream (+35% m.f. ) to thin out the strained yogurt to desired consistency or fat content.
This is a great article!! I love pecans, walnuts, macadamia and Brazil nuts. Moderation is definitely the key. I don't think I could ever cut them out completely, and so glad this article backs up my thoughts about them. It's also nice to hear a good word about flax! For a few months now I've read nothing but bad about it and though I have some I've avoided using it. Now I think I will start adding it back in! Thanks for all this research!!
Still iffy about certain fruits? Double check the carbohydrate counts in a nutrition database to make sure your fruit of choice is not too sugary. The carb counts can really creep up on you if you don’t track and measure. Be careful! Don’t let your sweet tooth take over your portion control or you will kick your cute little butt right out of ketosis.
Most condiments below range from 0.5–2 net carb grams per 1–2 tablespoon serving. Check ingredient labels to make sure added sugar is not included, which will increase net carbs. (Stevia and erythritol will become your go-to sweeteners because neither raise your blood sugar — combine for a more natural sweet taste and, remember, a little goes a long way!)
Keeping you focused on the other hand, has a little more to do with cottage cheeses’ fats. Eating good fats in the morning is crucial for lasting brain power. Before we go into the benefits of healthy fats let’s demystify the low-fat diet. Remember when fat and dairy consumption was obesity’s best friend and the cause of your loved one’s heart attacks?
Eggs are also acceptable for you to eat on keto. The best part is that you don’t have to forgo the yolks, like many diets might require you to do. You can enjoy both the egg whites and the egg yolks when preparing your morning omelet. With only one gram of net carbs for each egg, you won’t have to feel guilty about having them as part of your diet.
It starts with limiting carbohydrate intake to just 20–30 net grams per day. “Net carbs” describes the amount of carbs remaining once dietary fiber is taken into account. Because fiber is indigestible once consumed, simply don’t count grams of fiber toward their daily carb allotment. So that means subtracting grams of fiber from total carb games, to give you the total net carbs.
When you have too much bad bacteria in your gut, you’ll usually suffer from uncomfortable digestive issues and other irritating symptoms such as bloating, constipation, candida overgrowth and bladder infections. To combat these unwanted side effects, rebalancing your gut bacteria levels is necessary so that you have a healthy mix of good and bad bacteria.
Even after irradiation (the industry standard sterilization process that also destroys any antioxidants and health benefits), spices and herbs can spoil in your home, and often harbor aggressive mold toxins. To spice up your dishes the Bulletproof way, use high-quality, fresh or recently opened herbs and spices. Spices with especially high mold toxin risk include black pepper, powdered garlic, nutmeg, and paprika. Apple cider vinegar is the only vinegar permitted in the Bulletproof diet, as other vinegars and yeasts introduce toxins, and promote yeast growth in your gut.

If you were drawn to the ketogenic diet because you were promised copious amounts of cheese,  no one would blame you. Cheese is delicious. However, “I’m on keto” does not mean you have carte blanche to eat three mozzarella cheese sticks plus a couple bites of cheddar followed by some shredded cheese eaten out of the bag in front of your fridge at midnight. It’s easy to fall into the trap of foods that are technically keto, but not good for optimizing your overall health. Like the aforementioned cheese. (And if you’re following the Bulletproof Diet or just want to feel like the most kickass version of yourself, it’s highly recommended to avoid cheese — more on that shortly.)

So to honor the anniversary of my little low carb recipe site (that maybe isn’t so little anymore?), I wanted to share with you one of my favorite low carb recipes. It’s not a celebratory cake or low carb dessert, but it’s a part of a popular low carb dinner staple… low carb tacos using keto cheese taco shells!
Milk (only small amounts of raw, full-fat milk is allowed). Milk is not recommended for several reasons. Firstly, all the dairy products, milk is difficult to digest, as it lacks the "good" bacteria (eliminated through pasteurization) and may even contain hormones. Secondly, it is quite high in carbs (4-5 grams of carbs per 100 ml). For coffee and tea, replace milk with cream in reasonable amounts. You may have a small amount of raw milk but be aware of the extra carbs. Lastly, farmers in the United States use genetically engineered bovine growth hormone (rBGH). rBGH is injected to dairy cows to increase milk production. Opt for full-fat dairy labeled “NO rBGH”.
I made this because we are on a strict low carb diet and it is extremely hard to find satisfying snacks or desserts. OMG this is some good cheesecake!!! I used xylitol and tweaked the recipe just a little, I added a little more vanilla, a pinch of salt to the filling and the crust, I also added a bit of lime juice instead of lemon. We felt guilty after eating it because it just does not taste like a “diet” cheesecake. My only complaint is that it did not set completely solid so it’s a little more soft and creamy than I prefer. I think I need to adjust the temp on my oven so I can cook it longer next time. This will be my go to cheesecake recipe from now on.
Maya! I have made this about 6 times and my family and friends flip over it. I hand wrote on the printed recipe: “Freakin-Awesome!!!” My 17 year old son saw my note and chuckled. We pour pure blueberry, cherry or pomegranate juice that’s cold pressed on top when we have company. Thank you for a really great recipe. With the higher levels of antioxidants found in matcha tea, this smoothie is guaranteed to get your day off to a healthy start! It is thickened with chia seeds and would make a lovely refreshing drink for breakfast. Some green smoothies can be quite a vibrant color, but this one is a more gentle shade, so not as off-putting for green smoothie novices!

Fruits with over 10g net carbs per 100g in weight. Depending on your carbohydrate tolerance and whether or not you are fat adapted, you may be stretching the boundaries of nutritional ketosis by eating fruit with higher carb content or more significant quantities of the low carb fruits listed. There will always be exceptions and outliers; be sure to reference the searchable low carb fruits list below to pinpoint carb counts if you are unsure.
Hey, can I add more vanilla and lemon without it changing the consistancy of the cheescake. Also is the fruit sauce still keto approved since it has natural sugar. If so, can I use blueberries or strawberries instead? Sorry, I’ve tried to ask a few times now so if a million different versions of this question shows up, I apologize. BTW loved this recipe. I just wanted it to taste a little bolder on its own.
Keto nuts and seeds, on the other hand, are rich in fat and low in carbs, having a minimal impact on blood glucose. In fact, research shows that eating these foods has an anti-diabetic effect [1]. This effect does not come solely from the high fat content of nuts and seeds. Fiber also helps as it feeds good gut bacteria which then supports normal metabolism functioning. Their high antioxidant content also helps lower inflammation in the body and inflammation is a key driver of diabetes.
Juices or juice concentrate. When the fruit is juiced, most of the fiber gets stripped from the final product. This makes the net carb content of fruit juice higher than it’s pure fruit counterpart and will have a more significant impact on your blood sugar. The exception to this would be lemon/lime juice in moderation, as it’s quite low in sugar compared to other juices.
The whole point of going keto is to reach ketosis, a cult-y sounding name for the metabolic process that happens when your body uses fat instead of carbs for energy. To get there, you've gotta do the obvious: eat a whole lot of fat and little to no carbs. It's restrictive, but if you hack the the system just right, you can still create surprisingly delicious food—like taquitos and cookie dough bites. (These are our favorite keto recipes, by the way.)
There are plenty of keto fruit options out there that are high in fiber and low in net carbs, making them an ideal addition to a well-rounded ketogenic diet. In fact, adding a few low-carb fruits to your daily diet can help satisfy your sweet tooth while also supplying a steady stream of the vitamins, minerals and antioxidants that your body needs.
Although there are plenty of low-carb fruits out there, not all types of fruit can fit into a ketogenic diet. In particular, dried fruits and fruit juices pack a concentrated amount of sugar and carbs into each serving and should be avoided altogether when cutting carbs to reach ketosis. Fruits canned in syrup may also be higher in sugar, which can quickly drive up calorie and carb consumption and hinder your progress.
So that spoon you are using looks rather large, I’m not sure I have one that large, much less 6 of them. Yo do hang them individually, right? Also I’m not sure I’ll have the counter space or cups to do 6 separately… am I understanding this right? Are there other ideas for the hanging part? Have you tried any taco shell molds or the racks? Just curious if these would work also?
Although excellent sources of fat, nuts add up quickly in protein and carbs, and are often inflammatory. Snack on fattier nuts such as macadamia nuts and pecans, but limit those high in inflammatory omega-6s, like peanuts and sunflower seeds. Only use nut flours (almond, coconut) in moderation, as they are packed with protein. To stay in ketosis, limit high-carb nuts like cashews, pistachios and chestnuts, and avoid most beans.
