To make fruit a part of your keto diet, it's best to add it to your meals instead of eating it on its own. For example, you can make a small fruit salad topped with heavy cream (sweetened with stevia, of course). You can also add a bit of keto diet fruit to your smoothie, chia pudding, keto muffins or top cheesecakes or pancakes with a couple of berries.
Fruits with over 10g net carbs per 100g in weight. Depending on your carbohydrate tolerance and whether or not you are fat adapted, you may be stretching the boundaries of nutritional ketosis by eating fruit with higher carb content or more significant quantities of the low carb fruits listed. There will always be exceptions and outliers; be sure to reference the searchable low carb fruits list below to pinpoint carb counts if you are unsure.
This cheesecake is in the oven baking as we speak. I did use crushed pecans with some cinnamon added along with your other ingredients. The filling looks and tastes AMAZING (I know, I know, it has raw eggs in it). I was about to give up on Keto because quite frankly every recipe I tried just wasnt tasting great. Then I found your site! I also made some of the caramel sauce and I must say that is fantastic all on it’s own. Thank you so much for sharing your recipes! I look forward to making many more.
It’s the same question again and again. Keto is so different than the Standard American Diet, just figuring out what to eat really trips people up. For those first getting started, it can be a little tricky identifying which foods are keto and which ones to avoid. If you’re struggling to figure out what you can and can’t eat, this guide will give you a great starting point to determine which foods are keto friendly! All foods listed here are low in carbohydrates and can easily be incorporated into a ketogenic diet. Think of these as your go-to foods!

There are quite a few flours out there made from nuts and seeds that can be used to substitute wheat flour. Gravies, sauces, low carb baked goods… it’s absolutely insane how creative people have gotten with low carb flours. Breads, cookies, you name it. I would recommend sticking to whole foods and wait to venture into baked goods territory. Get comfortable with what you can and can’t eat, get into ketosis, and then start experimenting with ketofied versions of your favorite foods.

Some people group tomatoes with vegetables, but a tomato is actually a fruit. Low in fat but also carbs (with just 2.4 g of net carbs per ½ cup), tomatoes are also keto-friendly. The same serving size of tomatoes contains 2.4 g of sugar and 16 calories. Among their health benefits, tomatoes contain lycopene, which research suggests may help prevent heart disease.
Coconut offers nutritional and medicinal properties from its fatty acid content. This means that every time you use ingredients such as coconut oil or coconut milk, you're obtaining a ton of beneficial nutrients while still adhering to your ketogenic diet. Coconut products are some of the easiest ingredients to integrate into smoothies, stews and soups. Just make sure there aren't any added sugars in any of the coconut products you use.

Nevertheless, by 1977, when the Senate convened the first Select Committee on Nutritional and Human Needs, the so-called diet-heart hypothesis had been been misconstrued as the diet-heart gospel. The first US “Dietary Guidelines for Americans,” released in 1980, recommended that all Americans eat fewer high-fat foods and substitute nonfat milk for whole milk. “By 1984,” writes La Berge, “the scientific consensus was that the low-fat diet was appropriate not only for high-risk patients, but also as a preventative measure for everyone except babies.”

Although excellent sources of fat, nuts add up quickly in protein and carbs, and are often inflammatory. Snack on fattier nuts such as macadamia nuts and pecans, but limit those high in inflammatory omega-6s, like peanuts and sunflower seeds. Only use nut flours (almond, coconut) in moderation, as they are packed with protein. To stay in ketosis, limit high-carb nuts like cashews, pistachios and chestnuts, and avoid most beans.

Because the body turns the fat into energy after its carbohydrate stores are depleted, the ketogenic diet has potential weight loss benefits. Research has shown that fats and proteins are the most satiating, while carbohydrates are the least. Because you feel full longer after eating fats and proteins, you reduce the number of calories you eat overall.

We already mentioned that fruit is an important source of vitamin C. Well, fruit is also a great way of meeting your daily needs for potassium and folate – two nutrients that studies show most people are not eating enough [5]. You will also find these nutrients in certain vegetables, but fruit is a more reliable source of these nutrients as it is, more often than not, eaten fresh.
This looks awesome and I’m going to try it. I’ve been doing “keto” since before it was called that. I fell off the wagon several years ago but have recently come back to the fold as it’s the only way of eating that works for me. Anyway I wanted to mention that when my kids were growing up I made yogurt often. And then when I started low carbing I decided to try making it with heavy cream and it worked! And it’s amazing. Obviously more work than this but try it!
YOU GUYS! Launching my new favorite product this week: our keto nut butter 😍🤤 _ Before I went on carnivore, I probably crushed 14 jars of this velvety smooth creation. _ This lovely jar is packed with raw macadamia nuts, cashews, coconut butter and MCT oil to get you all the healthy fats your little heart desires. _ We also are using REAL ground vanilla and sea salt in this bad boy. Check out the bottom of that jar for proof. _ EDIT: we sold out on Amazon! Head to perfectketo.com/nut-butter for more. _ Can’t wait to hear what you think! 🌰🥜🌰🥜
With only two ingredients, this low-carb dairy-free yogurt couldn’t be easier to make, so you can have a regular supply to turn into breakfast dishes or to add to sauces to make them super-creamy. This recipe gives enough about six small pots, but you can easily double the ingredients without having to adjust the timing. Serve this with a little honey and some berries for a fresh and fruity breakfast.
Michelle, I second Libby’s remarks about “The fear of saturated fat is so old fashioned and outdated. Research shows saturated fat is healthy, stable and protective.”. In addition to her link, get a used copy (or new) of Nora Gedgaudas’s book Primal Body Primal Mind. Dr. Eric Berg has put out many youtube videos about Keto and intermittent fasting. Search his name with weight, or keto, or intermittent fasting, or phytic acid. They are some interesting videos.
•  Humans unlike true carnivores do not have fangs to tear the flesh while the prey is walking.  We need to marinate it to tenderize and so on which basically indicates we are not carnivore and that eating meat is an acquired taste.  Humans are infatuated with the taste of meat and for long time now we have believed that eating meat is legitimate, a mistake with horrible consequences for animals and us.
I use Swerve powder and Pyure Blend. When you say you can use any sweetener you want, are the measurements 1:1 with your listed sweeteners. I’ve checked the Sweetener conversion chart you’ve provided and if you call for 1/4 cup of Erythritol, there is no conversion for Pyure, and a lot of your recipies call for 1/4 cup of Erythritol. I just want to make sure I do accurate measurements.
This recipe is just amazing!!! Thank you for sharing! Quick question for you: I came up with 6 net carbs a serving (using Wellbee’s flour and taking all swerve carbs out if the equation). I see your nutrition facts list 3 but then a comment you wrote said 5. Any idea which it actually is for you and any guesses what the discrepancies could be?? Thanks again!
I just made this for a birthday celebration. Absolutely fantastic! I had fresh limes and substituted for the lemon juice. It was so creamy and delicious 🙂 Even the sugar lovers were surprised at how great it was, couldn’t tell it was low carb. The next time I make this, it will get a topping of sweetened (Swerve confectioners) sour cream with zest mixed in. I can’t thank you enough for this recipe!
Hi Viola, Sorry you had issues with the cheesecake. Did you use the exact same ingredients? Did you check the video? I’d be happy to help troubleshoot if you can point to where it went differently for you. As for cracking, this is likely due to either drastic temperature changes or over-baking. Check the tips in the post above. Finally, instructions for the raspberry sauce are in the recipe notes on the recipe card.
Another thing worth noting is that there are three main types of carbohydrates: starches, sugars, and fiber. Of these three, sugars spike blood glucose levels the most, while fiber has no direct effect whatsoever. Fruit being particularly high in sugar is the most problematic plant food for keto. But if you plan your diet right, fruit can and should be part of your keto journey.
Prior to your response, I did make a cheesecake, using your recipe for the filling (so delish, and I received all favorable comments on it). Due to the cost difference between almond and coconut flour, I did find a recipe similar to the one you shared in your response, 1/2 C melted butter (1 stick) whisked until fully blended with 2 eggs, 1/4 tsp salt and 1/2 tsp vanilla. Then slowly mix in 3/4 C sifted coconut flour. Kneaded for about a minute, adding coconut flour until not sticky. I simply then pressed crust into only the bottom portion of the springform pan, used a fork to punch multiple holes in it, then baked at 400° for 10 minutes. I let it fully cool before adding filling, then used your perfect instructions to bake the cheesecake. Love, love, love this recipe. I’m a happy Type-II Diabetic!
Some people believe that it's dangerous when your body enters ketosis. However, it's important to understand the difference between ketosis, which is nutritionally safe, and ketoacidosis, which is caused by a lack of insulin and can increase blood sugar significantly. The ketogenic diet keeps the body in ketosis, not ketoacidosis. It's still important to monitor your ketone levels and consult with your doctor before embarking on this diet, since ketoacidosis is a serious medical issue.
My husband and I have been eating low-carb for about 5 years now, so you can imagine how many meals I’ve cooked for this way of eating. We just ate double servings of this cheesecake, topped with a mixed berry sauce, and we both agreed that without doubt this is the finest cheesecake recipe we’ve ever tasted. Ever. My husband’s birthday is next month. In the middle of eating this, he told me this is what he wants for his birthday “cake.” Then he told me to rename it “AAAACheescake” so that it will be the first one in my recipe file. I’m going away for the weekend, so I have to freeze the rest of it or there won’t be any left when I get back! Thank you so much for the time and effort you put into this! I’ll be telling everyone about your website. May God continue to bless you as you help us all live a healthy life!

The meat replacement protein called Quorn is a sort of mushroom. It needs flavor adding and any factory-added crispy coating removing. It is a good vegetarian source of texture and protein. Low carb vegetables are crucial for your wellbeing on keto and boost your wellbeing. However, many people have had bad experiences with these powerful plants! Soggy sprouts in school canteens and being forced to vegetables have given them a bad reputation. You may need to experiment to find the textures, flavors and cooking methods YOU prefer. Make tasty sauces to serve with your low carb vegetables making them easier to eat. Low carb vegetables are crucial for nutritional wellbeing. You will benefit immensely from adding them to your keto diet.
Avoid meat with condiments. Because, even if you’re enjoying a 4th of July barbecue with grass-fed burgers, a dollop of ketchup might be all it takes to kick you out of ketosis. (Depending on many factors, you may need to limit your total net carbs to 25-50 grams per day to stay in ketosis.) So, enhance your meats with natural spices and herbs instead.
These taste so freaking good. I used this filling and the crust/baking directions from the pina colada cheesecake cupcake recipe. The only thing I would change is to make sure to include directions to beat the eggs into the cream cheese/sweetener mixture on the lowest speed to avoid getting air bubbles in there!!! I beat them too fast and ended up with cheesecakes that puffed way up in the oven and the deflated when they cooled and it made the texture a little off. Planning on making them again sometime because they seriously taste amazing and were pretty easy, just sucks because I was making these for graduation and made 2.5 dozen and none turned out right 🙁

I am on a ketogenic diet from last 9 days but no change in my weight.I also walk briskly for an hour on treadmill and cycle apart from some exercises.i take three meals in d day comprising of eggs (2)and cottage cheese in the morning with green tea with coconut milk,Red meat 2pieces or chicken with tomatoes or spinach cooked in olive oil in lunch and egg scramble and 1 piece of meat in evening.please suggest me what should I do to go into ketosis immediately
Oleuropein has been shown to produce numerous anti-oxidant, anti-inflammatory, anti-cancer, anti-viral and anti-bacterial benefits. Olive consumption increases glutathione production in the cardiovascular system and helps to prevent cancer cell growth throughout the body. (34, 33)  Olives and olive oil are great foods to eat on a ketogenic diet.  I like the pitted Kalamata olives here
However, most nuts also contain antioxidants that protect against linoleic acid oxidation, so considering the small amount of nuts most people eat, this is probably not a huge problem for you to worry about. And if you are worried, then dehydrating soaked nuts at low temperatures can be useful in reducing the possibility of PUFA damage along with the levels of phytic acids in nuts.
I stay away from any Greek yogurt with less than 10 % m.f. Lots of brands out there with +10% m.f., like Greek god, astro, Olympic, etc. If you can't find it in the grocery store, here's a tip I learned from a friend: get the highest percentage m.f. Greek yogurt you can find, then put it in a salad spinner and draw as much water out. The yogurt water is full of lactose (milk sugar). You will be left with a thicker yogurt that contains more fat (and protein) per portion, and less carbohydrates. You can then add heavy cream (+35% m.f. ) to thin out the strained yogurt to desired consistency or fat content.
Mainly for health reasons, avoid soy products apart from a few non-GMO fermented products which are known for their health benefits. Also avoid wheat gluten which may be used in low-carb foods. When you give up bread, you shouldn't eat any part of it. Beware of BPA-lined cans. If possible, use naturally BPA-free packaging like glass jars or make your own ingredients such as ghee, ketchup, coconut milk or mayonnaise. BPA has been linked to many negative health effects such as impaired thyroid function and cancer. Other additives to avoid: carrageenan (e.g. almond milk products), MSG (e.g. in some whey protein products) and sulfites (e.g. in dried fruits, gelatin).

Native to Central America, chia was a stable to the Aztec in pre-Columbus times. The seeds gained popularity in the 1980s as a superfood. Keto dieters love them for their high fat content and health benefits. These seeds are tiny and oval. They are mostly gray in color with stripes, resembling miniature castor seeds. Chia have hydrophilic characteristics, absorbing up to 12 times their weight in liquid.

It starts with limiting carbohydrate intake to just 20–30 net grams per day. “Net carbs” describes the amount of carbs remaining once dietary fiber is taken into account. Because fiber is indigestible once consumed, simply don’t count grams of fiber toward their daily carb allotment. So that means subtracting grams of fiber from total carb games, to give you the total net carbs.
Chia seeds are 40% carbohydrates, mostly is in the form of dietary fiber. Fiber is an indigestible carb that does not impact blood sugar or ketone production. It's important for normal bowel movements and gut health in general. Chia is also 30% fat, most of which is omega-3 fatty acids (65%). This makes chia seeds a great source of this essential fatty acid.
Scientists are discovering that we need specific nutrition found only in plants to regulate our DNA. DNA is our genetics, but the regulation is our EPI-genetics. Basically your DNA is a template for your whole body, but it needs specific signals, from your diet, to regulate it how it works. Phyto-chemicals, found in abundance in low carb vegetables and keto friendly fruit are crucial for DNA regulation. These plant based signals kick-start fertility, virility, libido, a positive mood and much more. That’s exactly what you want on keto, even more health, energy and vitality! In fact, eating enough nutritionally dense plants will prevent many of the diseases we find so commonly today.

Here’s a nutritional list of some of the more commonly consumed vegetables on keto. Keep in mind that the weights are the same of everything listed so that it will impact the skew of the carb counts. For example, in a meal you may have 6 oz. of broccoli in the side, but you would not have 6 oz. worth of berries in the morning. You may mix 6 oz. of berries into a pudding with 4 servings.
This trend line extended to cultured dairy. If you, like me, were born in the ’90s, you probably grew up eating low-fat yogurts like Original Yoplait (99 percent fat-free) or low-fat Dannon Fruit on the Bottom. Even YoCrunch, that junk-food yogurt with toppings, used (and still uses) low-fat yogurt as its base. This is just to say, low-fat yogurt was yogurt; it was what people wanted when they said they wanted yogurt. What began as an unproven heart disease theory had come to embody an implicit consumer logic.

There are links above to get free meal plans & more keto info. I’ve lost 60 lbs in 10 months & changed my life. My single best piece of advise? Buy a good keto info & recipe book. Key word in last sentence is “GOOD”. Hard copy for instant reference. Worth its weight in gold.
And that’s how the short version above came about: based on the numbers, a good rule of thumb is to eat between 1 and 3 meals per day with meat, with other protein sources (eggs, nuts, dairy) at the meat-free meals. This will work well for most people – although, as always, everyone’s a little different and you might feel best with more or less. It’s not an exact science, and it doesn’t need to be.
Although you'll be cutting way back on carbohydrates and sugar, some fruits are still okay to eat on the keto diet (though you'll still want to be mindful about quantity in order to remain in ketosis). The fruits that make the cut contain far fewer carbs than their off-limits cousins such as apples, pears, bananas, pineapples, papayas, grapes, and fruit juices in general.
Hi Cindy, You’d need a sweetener to make cheesecake sweet. 🙂 I always recommend following doctor’s orders, but your husband may want to clarify on the different types of sweeteners with his doctor. They are not all the same. Erythritol typically gets absorbed but not metabolized, so it works differently than most sugar alcohols that tend to cause upset stomach and GI problems. Like I said, always go by what your doctor says, but no harm in asking for clarification.
If you choose to make your sauces and gravies, you should consider investing in guar or xanthan gum. It’s a thickener that’s well known in modern cooking techniques and lends a hand to low carb by thickening otherwise watery sauces. Luckily there are many sauces to choose from that are high fat and low carb. If you’re in need of a sauce then consider making a beurre blanc, hollandaise or simply brown butter to top meats with.
Peanuts are technically a legume, not a nut. However, I find them to be a delicious keto snack, especially peanut butter. Peanut butter is one of the easiest things for me to overconsume, personally. The carb count of peanuts is on the higher end, so it’s important to watch the serving size if your goal is to stick to keto. My suggestion is to always measure out a serving of peanuts or peanut butter before consuming.

I made this on Monday, let it sit in the fridge overnight and it was fabulous last night (Tuesday) and still fabulous tonight (Wednesday). My only minor issue was that the cream cheese didn’t seem to get smooth after blending and so after the cake sat and we ate it, you could taste the crumbles of cream cheese. When I started to bend the mixture (using hand mixer) I started off slow, then sped up the speed thinking that would help remove the clumps. But then I saw your note about not over-mixing because that would cause air pockets. I continued to blend but at a lower speed then just put it in the pan to bake..thinking maybe the clumps would sort themselves out while baking. What do you recommend for next time? Either way, it was fabulous! Thank you!!!

We hope this list helps you figure out which meats are optimal for your daily diet planning. We are working on creating a printable version of this, so check back with us for that. We would love to hear your thoughts on this, so please leave us a comment below. If you have a favorite cut of meat that we left off this list, let us know what it is. We can add it to the calculator and see what score it gets.

Additionally, a ketogenic diet can improve your energy, cognitive acceleration and overall daily performance.  Most people feel their best when in a state of mild-ketosis.  One of the big challenges, is that most people have been raised on higher carb comfort foods.  So rather than focusing on what foods you will miss, shift your energy to all the great foods you can enjoy.  Here are 22 ketogenic foods that you will LOVE!
Hi Liz, As far as the Swerve goes, most online calculators don’t subtract sugar alcohols when showing net carbs, so that may be the issue. Regarding the butter, all butter is keto approved (as long as it’s real butter). 🙂 If you calculated by hand, then let me know which ingredient is showing a lot of carbs for you and I can help determine what was off. The few net carbs in the recipe come from almond flour and cream cheese. The brands of pantry ingredients I use are linked in the recipe card (pink links). I use Kerrygold for the butter and Philadelphia for the cream cheese.

This cheesecake tastes amazing! I made it for the first time yesterday, and the hardest part was waiting for it to cool. I did modify the recipe slightly; I only used 20 ounces (2 1/2 packs) of cream cheese just because I was mixing them one block at a time and it seemed to be plenty enough for the entire cheesecake at 2 1/2. I then used half of the batter to make the cheesecake in a pie plate and used the other half to make 24 mini crustless cheesecakes. I still used the same amount of sweetener for the filling because I like my cheesecake on the sweeter side. I loved the crust as well. I made a strawberry topping and it tasted very similar to a cheesecake biscuit with jelly. The next time I can get my hands on dairy-free cream cheese, I will make it with that. I will definitely be making this for my next family gathering. Thanks so much for the delicious recipe!
Hi Maya! Will be trying this recipe for my husband’s birthday this weekend. I’m new to keto and my husband is supporting me with cutting out sugar as much as he can. I just have 1 question – in the nutrition facts, you mentioned net carbs 5g, fiber 1g and sugar 2g. What is the difference between net carbs and sugar? I thought the sugar count is a part of total carbs subtracting the fiber which would mean the sugar count is equal to the net carbs? Hope you can explain further! Thank you 🙂
These pancakes do not turn out firm enough for you to be able to flip them in the air, but that is exactly what makes them so incredibly soft, fragile, meltable inside your mouth, etc. At this point, for some reason, I can’t help but hear Debra Morgan from the Dexter series using the f-word like a hundred times to compliment on the softness of the pancakes.
