Another thing worth noting is that there are three main types of carbohydrates: starches, sugars, and fiber. Of these three, sugars spike blood glucose levels the most, while fiber has no direct effect whatsoever. Fruit being particularly high in sugar is the most problematic plant food for keto. But if you plan your diet right, fruit can and should be part of your keto journey.
Native to Central America, chia was a stable to the Aztec in pre-Columbus times. The seeds gained popularity in the 1980s as a superfood. Keto dieters love them for their high fat content and health benefits. These seeds are tiny and oval. They are mostly gray in color with stripes, resembling miniature castor seeds. Chia have hydrophilic characteristics, absorbing up to 12 times their weight in liquid.

Perhaps the only thing more divisive than politics is canola oil. People have thoughts about it. Given the research available, Bulletproof and a growing number of nutrition experts are of the opinion that you should toss your canola oil. Canola oil is extracted via a process called hexane solvent extraction. This process uses chemicals and high heat to extract the oil and process it, and the final product is high in oxidation and trans fats.[3] In studies, canola oil has been linked to lower antioxidant levels in the body[4] and lung inflammation.[5]

Plus, many nuts are salted and may have been roasted in a tasty oil. That makes them really enticing and can lead to overeating or binging on them, which can cause weight gain as well as kick you out of nutritional ketosis. With that in mind, if you find yourself feeling out of control around nuts, you might be better off staying away from them altogether.
Great info. I’ll be starting again Jan 1, started before but barely got into it when I ended up in the hospital for respiratory failure, didn’t want to start a program like this on hospital food. Anyway, after doctors and oxygen, etc., I’m back in the right frame of mind, cleared out all my cupboards, fridge, etc., just have enough to get me to Jan 1. It’s been a horrible year, so gonna make 2019 MY year, all ways around. This list will help a lot, since I keep forgetting whats what, and was eating honey, thinking it was OK since it was natural, etc…..wrong! I think I kind of have the rest OK, but thanks for the reference sheet, this will help a lot.
Oatmeal is something we all miss when it starts to get cold outside, but it is filled with carbs. You can easily make your own oatmeal by following one of the many recipes online. Or, if you’d like a different twist on oatmeal, give our Cinnamon Roll Oatmeal a try. Using what you might think are strange ingredients (cue cauliflower), you get an absolutely delicious faux oatmeal.
Thank you SO much for the breakdown. This is an excellent list that I am going to take with me to the store from now on. I haven’t started on the diet as of yet because I was trying to put a grocery list together. This list has been one of VERY few that have the foods and the guided amount without having to pay an absurd amount of money for a list of food you can and cant eat. There weren’t any recommended amounts to eat for the meat section and wanted to know if you had any recommendations for portions. Thanks again for taking time to get wonderful information out there.
Hi Kelley, The spoon is just a regular-sized cooking utensil. Sometimes you can fit two taco shells on one – just not on top of each other, side by side only. You can also use virtually any utensils that you have with a round handle. The shells harden fairly quickly, so you can even set them on your kitchen table to harden. Taco molds or racks might also work, you’d just need something where you can place or hang them upside down.
So, how do we ensure enough super-plant based nutrition on keto? Fortunately there are loads of low carb vegetables and keto friendly fruit you can choose from! Let’s start with low carb vegetables - specifically the green ones! The green color in plants is called chlorophyll. Plants use chlorophyll to capture sunlight and turn it into energy. Chlorophyll protects the body from cancer and cleanses the liver. Amazingly, our bodies can also use chlorophyll inside our mitochondria. This is why green juices, made fresh or from powders, give us a rapid natural energy boost. Green leafy plants like Kale, Spinach and Collard Greens reduce the risk of cancer and many other diseases. Make sure you eat your greens on keto!

Potential Health Benefits: Improvements in lipid profile. In one study, people with mildly elevated cholesterol consumed 30 grams (1 ounce) of hazelnuts for 4 weeks. By the end of the study, they had significant reductions in total cholesterol and cholesterol: HDL ratio. In addition, they experienced a significant decrease in apo-B, reflecting a reduction in their LDL particle number (16).

Please note that I am not a medical or nutritional professional. I am simply recounting and sharing my own experiences on this blog. Nothing I express here should be taken as medical advice and you should consult with your doctor before starting any diet or exercise program. I provide nutritional information for my recipes simply as a courtesy to my readers. It is calculated using MacGourmet software and I remove erythritol from the final carb count and net carb count, as it does not affect my own blood glucose levels. I do my best to be as accurate as possible but you should independently calculate nutritional information on your own before relying on them. I expressly disclaim any and all liability of any kind with respect to any act or omission wholly or in part in reliance on anything contained in this website.

Broccoli, cabbage, brussel sprouts, and cauliflower fall into the cruciferous veggie category and are also must-haves in your diet. They range from three to six grams of net carbs per one cup. They’ll also come with some great benefits, such as a decreased risk of cancer and heart disease. Other great choices include celery, cucumber, and zucchini. All of these vegetables will make the perfect side dish to have with your lunch or dinner, so make sure you stock up!
This cheesecake is in the oven baking as we speak. I did use crushed pecans with some cinnamon added along with your other ingredients. The filling looks and tastes AMAZING (I know, I know, it has raw eggs in it). I was about to give up on Keto because quite frankly every recipe I tried just wasnt tasting great. Then I found your site! I also made some of the caramel sauce and I must say that is fantastic all on it’s own. Thank you so much for sharing your recipes! I look forward to making many more.
Oh my god, they are freaking delish. I had to bake for 20 mins instead and theyre still pretty crumbly but the best thing I’ve made on Keto. I was so sure they’d taste weird because of the almond flour but they taste seriously great. Wouldn’t be bad to have a coconut version and instead of raspberry, just use cocoa powder in either the cookie or the cream cheese.
I can’t figure out why this recipe calls for 32oz. of cream cheese, even if making into 12 cupcakes; I ended up with a huge amount of the “cake” part after filling the cups. I could have followed the Pina Colada cupcakes but because I didn’t plan to add the Pina Colada ingredients, I thought it best to follow this regular cheesecake recipe. Did I miss something that told me to reduce the amount of ingredients if making cupcakes? Everything still tasted great but I have a ton of product left over.
Still iffy about certain fruits? Double check the carbohydrate counts in a nutrition database to make sure your fruit of choice is not too sugary. The carb counts can really creep up on you if you don’t track and measure. Be careful! Don’t let your sweet tooth take over your portion control or you will kick your cute little butt right out of ketosis.
Fruits with over 10g net carbs per 100g in weight. Depending on your carbohydrate tolerance and whether or not you are fat adapted, you may be stretching the boundaries of nutritional ketosis by eating fruit with higher carb content or more significant quantities of the low carb fruits listed. There will always be exceptions and outliers; be sure to reference the searchable low carb fruits list below to pinpoint carb counts if you are unsure.
I have been on a Keto diet for a little over 2 weeks now. I am still getting tingly sensations and minor headaches, though I believe that will dissipate once I'm fully adjusted in another 2-4 weeks. I started running again and am pushing it pretty hard, so I'm sure that's contributing. It feels like when I used to starve myself for wrestling and I get a sense that my blood sugar is low. I have added hemp hearts (about 6 tablespoons per day) to help combat because I read more magnesium can help.
I’ve made this before for my husband’s birthday a few weeks ago and it was a huge hit! I’m wanting to make it again but realized that I’m out of vanilla extract for this time around. I have coffee, lemon, cinnamon, and peppermint extracts. What would you recommend as a vanilla extract substitute? I’m out of almond extract too.. How much to use also?
If you like smoothies but don’t fancy the banana-based ones as they can contain extra sugars, then a coconut yogurt-based one can solve the problem! With the natural sweetness of the berries, this drink makes a fresh and fruity start to the day or a lovely refreshing Paleo-friendly snack. This recipe could also be used to make a frozen yogurt dessert!

Eggs are also acceptable for you to eat on keto. The best part is that you don’t have to forgo the yolks, like many diets might require you to do. You can enjoy both the egg whites and the egg yolks when preparing your morning omelet. With only one gram of net carbs for each egg, you won’t have to feel guilty about having them as part of your diet.
The question of what kinds of fat one should eat is still pretty much unresolved. What we know today for sure is this: It doesn’t really matter how much fat you eat, so long as you don’t eat too many calories. (Fats contain 9 calories per gram, compared to carbs and protein, which each have 4.) We also know that trans fats are bad, and we kinda-sorta think that unsaturated fats might be better than saturated fats. Beyond this, we can’t say too much for sure. In terms of food trends, it doesn’t really matter because fads are rarely backed by concrete fact.
Over the last year, the keto diet has skyrocketed in popularity, probably for one very distinct reason: it encourages you to eat fatty foods. The only major caveat is that you have to keep your carb intake low. Offsetting this often-difficult task, however, is the keto diet's allowance of another beloved food group: dairy. Most cheeses are low in carbs, making them perfectly acceptable for the keto meal plan. The same goes for fatty dairy foods like butter and heavy cream, which almost seems too good to be true. A diet that gives you the thumbs-up when you eat butter? It's not hard to see how it caught on and spread like wildfire.
You can usually use a mix of multiple flours to get a realistic texture in baking recipes. Combining flours and experimenting with your baking can lead to much lower net carb counts in recipes. We think these lemon poppyseed muffins (a mix of almond flour and flaxseed meal) make a great texture when combined with the fats from the heavy cream and butter.
Individuals with type-2 diabetes have especially found to have major health benefits from the consumption of this compound in foods like shirataki noodles. Although glucose levels elevated following a meal with glucomannan, studies show that insulin levels in type-2 diabetics is not significantly impacted. (36, 37)  I use these shiratki noodles on a regular basis.  This is one of the best foods to eat on a ketogenic diet.
Why is anti-inflammatory a good thing? Think about if you hurt your finger and it becomes inflamed. Acute inflammation can be a good thing and indicate your body is healing itself. Chronic inflammation means that a specific part of the body is no working well for long periods of time. If these are your gut organs, which deliver nutrients to your body and produce most of your serotonin, you are going to be performing at a vastly sub-optimal level.
While this roasted seaweed snack doesn’t pack in as much fat as many of the other picks on our list, we think it’s worth adding to your keto shopping cart. It’s low in calories, sodium, and has an impressive zero net carbs thanks to the fiber. Plus, the dried sea veggie is filled with fat-soluble vitamins and minerals such as iron, manganese, and copper to maintain overall health.
The top three “fruits” on this list hardly exemplify the prototypical image of fruits in our minds, and it should come as no surprise. Fruits are typically banished from everyone’s keto diet shopping list, and for good reason. They simply pack too much sugar, and sugar is what we’re supposed to be avoiding at all costs, right? While this assertion may be true for most fruits, it turns out that there are a few delicious berries that provide very manageable carb content at a reasonable serving size. Two ounces of raspberries every day would certainly be enough for most people. You can always grab another 2oz for a total of 14 grams of net carbs. This will require some macro gymnastics if you’re hoping to enjoy balanced meals for the rest of the day, however.
Although you'll be cutting way back on carbohydrates and sugar, some fruits are still okay to eat on the keto diet (though you'll still want to be mindful about quantity in order to remain in ketosis). The fruits that make the cut contain far fewer carbs than their off-limits cousins such as apples, pears, bananas, pineapples, papayas, grapes, and fruit juices in general.

This means that when you eat poppy seeds, you would fail an opiate test, so keep that in mind. The concentration of opiates in ripe poppy seeds is too low to cause any health problems, though. But they can help alleviate mild pain to some extent.Poppy seeds are rich in oleic and linoleic acids. These fatty acids help with weight loss and they balance out blood cholesterol. Linoleic acid is an essential nutrient important for health hair and wound healing.

Yogurt topped with a few nuts might seem like a no-brainer keto snack, but a 5.3 ounce serving of plain yogurt has 12 grams of carbohydrates. If you opt for flavored yogurt, like vanilla, that carb count doubles to 24 grams of carbohydrates for 6 ounces. Your best bet is to choose plain Greek yogurt, which has as little as five grams of carbohydrates for a 7 ounce serving.

Best thing to do for your cheesecake not to crack. Turn off the oven just when it’s still almost slight done. turn off the heat and leave in the oven for an hour. But DO NOT open the door at all. The residual heat will cook the rest and you won’t run the risk of overcooking and it’ll cool at the same time. Then take out of the oven to cool completely and refrigerate. I love cheesecake and keto cheesecake is just as good and satisfies the cravings.
Who doesn’t love the creamy combination of chocolate and peanut butter? In the Jones house we go nutzo for anything chocolate and anything peanut butter. Now you can enjoy this delicious combination and stay in ketosis. That’s a huge win! Again, cottage cheese is the star of the show here and protein powder and splenda add a chocolaty flavor and sweeten. Pro tip: Choose a keto protein powder for enhanced benefits.
Hi Maya! I only have 2 options for sweetener on hand: Sweet-Leaf powdered Stevia, or Truvia Baking Blend. Which do you think would turn out best? The Truvia is granulated, but its made from Erythritol and seems like I can use larger quantities of it. The Sweet-leaf container says I should use MUCH less, but it’s powdered. This is my first time baking using sugar alternatives and I’m just not sure which would be better!
These pancakes do not turn out firm enough for you to be able to flip them in the air, but that is exactly what makes them so incredibly soft, fragile, meltable inside your mouth, etc. At this point, for some reason, I can’t help but hear Debra Morgan from the Dexter series using the f-word like a hundred times to compliment on the softness of the pancakes.
Oleuropein has been shown to produce numerous anti-oxidant, anti-inflammatory, anti-cancer, anti-viral and anti-bacterial benefits. Olive consumption increases glutathione production in the cardiovascular system and helps to prevent cancer cell growth throughout the body. (34, 33)  Olives and olive oil are great foods to eat on a ketogenic diet.  I like the pitted Kalamata olives here
Although rhubarb is a vegetable, it is culinary fruit. The plant's leaf stalks are the only edible part noted for their tart and slightly sweet taste. Rhubarb complements strawberries well in desserts but there are many other ways to use this low-carb keto diet fruit. Studies show that rhubarb has powerful healing properties with evidence that it can even fight sepsis [6].
Thanks for sharing! First time making cheesecake – I’m actually new to liking cheesecake. Could be because I’m pregnant and my tastebuds have changed. But I’ve been craving it lately, and I am on a strict low carb diet. This is perfect! I didn’t have raspberries, so I tried a slice this afternoon w/natural PB. Delicious! Also, I think the crust could be a great low carb crust for other desserts, like chocolate cream pie! (Hint, Hint)
If you’re looking for comfort food this recipe has it all.. Beefy, cheesy, casserole-y it’s everything for satisfying those comfort food cravings without out knocking you out of ketosis. Inspired by the Pioneer Woman, this keto approved recipe hits all the right notes, takes minimal time to prep and calls for simple ingredients – including…you guessed it: cottage cheese. This is one that even picky kids will devour.
If you’ve never heard of rhubarb, it might be time to broaden your palate. Rhubarb tastes tart, and you can enjoy it raw, roasted, or puréed in a small, low-carb smoothie or moderate portion of sauce. A ½-cup serving contains about 1.7 g of net carbs and only about 13 calories. Rhubarb also has 176 mg of potassium (3.7 percent DV), 62 international units (IU) of vitamin A (1.2 percent DV), 4.9 mg of vitamin C (8.2 percent DV), and 52 mg of calcium (5.2 percent DV). Just remember to remove the leaves before eating, as they can be toxic in large amounts.
Rich in gut-happy bacteria, yogurt is a great way to add a little sweetness to a Keto diet. Although you can find Greek or low carb coconut yogurts on many grocery store shelves, why not get creative and make your own? It’s easy as pie and delicious homemade yogurt will be a fabulous addition to the recipes featured on our list of top Keto-friendly yogurt dishes!
In general, our team struggled to eat the high-fat yogurts without at least joking about calories. A single plain Peak has 270 calories. (The same amount of whole-fat plain Chobani has 143 calories.) Peak’s macros make sense if you’re on the keto diet, but most Americans are not. For American women especially, yogurt has long been marketed as a dieter’s food — the kind of thing you eat when you want to lose weight. Even in the gender-neutral, post-Chobani era, we still think of yogurt as a healthy-ish “treat.” Are we ready to accept yogurt as an actual treat? The answer to this question will probably decide the fate of high-fat yogurts in our market.
The consensus is that the Carbs shown on nutritional labels for yogurt containers are extremely misleading. The fermentation process brought on by the active cultures in yogurt, consume roughly half of the stated carbs. The nutritional labeling system REQUIRES food manufacturers to build the label based on the pre-cooking (or fermenting in this case) stage of the food.

Lower-carb veggies, like cucumber, celery, asparagus, squash, and zucchini; cruciferous veggies, like cabbage, cauliflower, broccoli, and Brussels sprouts; nightshades, like eggplant, tomatoes, and peppers; root vegetables, like onion, garlic, and radishes, and sea veggies, like nori and kombu. The guidelines are simple: focus on dark, leafy greens, then the stuff that grows above the ground, then root vegetables.

When I first started making homemade, low-carb yogurt, it really surprised me that you can use yogurt to make yogurt! Just add some yogurt to the milk and the magic will happen! Once the yogurt is made, strain through a cloth to achieve thick, Greek-style creamy goodness that you can eat straight or serve with some fruit for a healthy and delicious breakfast.

Strawberries and currants have fairly high sugar content in the 7 to 9 gram-per-cup serving range. Cranberries and raspberries, on the other hand, only have between 4.5 and 5.5 grams. You should be aware that it's not just about sugar, though — the total carbs in raspberries come out to 14.7 grams per serving, while cranberries have 13.4 grams per serving. Despite this, it's easy to have half a serving of any of these berries as part of a dessert or morning smoothie and still be within keto diet parameters.
Any of these sweeteners can help you stick with your ketogenic diet, keep your carbohydrates and sugars low and still obtain your sweet fix. Many are indigestible, which means they don't become carbohydrates at all, and your body just excretes them as waste. Just make sure that if you opt to use fruit powders like lucuma and monk fruit powder, no extra sugars have been added.
Although excellent sources of fat, nuts add up quickly in protein and carbs, and are often inflammatory. Snack on fattier nuts such as macadamia nuts and pecans, but limit those high in inflammatory omega-6s, like peanuts and sunflower seeds. Only use nut flours (almond, coconut) in moderation, as they are packed with protein. To stay in ketosis, limit high-carb nuts like cashews, pistachios and chestnuts, and avoid most beans.
