When you have too much bad bacteria in your gut, you’ll usually suffer from uncomfortable digestive issues and other irritating symptoms such as bloating, constipation, candida overgrowth and bladder infections. To combat these unwanted side effects, rebalancing your gut bacteria levels is necessary so that you have a healthy mix of good and bad bacteria.

While Yoplait is known for its dessert-flavored yogurts—a high-sugar snack that doesn’t make the cut while on keto—its newest addition tops our nutritional charts. Unlike other dairy yogurts, YQ by Yoplait drastically reduces its carb count by ultra-filtering the milk. This removes 99 percent of the lactose (a type of sugar), so you still get gut-loving probiotics with almost zero carbs.

Regardless of the reason you switched to a low carb diet, it’s important to be mindful of your daily macros and caloric intake. Watch alcohol intake because it is additional, and empty, calories and will hinder you reaching your goals. Alcohol metabolization stalls fat burning until it’s out of your system. Something we expand on further in our Guide to Keto Alcohol.
The ideal keto fruit is a high-fat, low-carb fruit. The two obvious choices here are coconut and avocado. Looking at ketogenic diet plans, you'll always see fat — that's the whole point of the diet, after all. However, it's important to diversify your fats. Don't always opt for milk products; instead, try swapping your whole milk for coconut milk or trading your butter for avocado butter.
Hi Justin, I’m glad you liked the cheesecake! This definitely doesn’t have 18g net carbs per slice – you can see that even at a glance since all the ingredients are very low carb (almond flour, cream cheese, eggs, erythritol, etc.) The nutrition label included below the recipe card shows the nutrition breakdown per slice. In MyFitnessPal, did you set the number of servings for the recipe to 16? If it was set to something else, that could be one reason for the number to be significantly off like that.
As mentioned earlier, the keto diet takes carbs intake into consideration. And if you look at carbs found in yogurt, you will find that yogurt, of many types, have lots of carbs. Strawberry yogurt, for instance, has around 33 grams of carbs, which is more than recommended 20g of carbs per meal to be in shape – and less than 20g per meal to lose weight.

Some people believe that it's dangerous when your body enters ketosis. However, it's important to understand the difference between ketosis, which is nutritionally safe, and ketoacidosis, which is caused by a lack of insulin and can increase blood sugar significantly. The ketogenic diet keeps the body in ketosis, not ketoacidosis. It's still important to monitor your ketone levels and consult with your doctor before embarking on this diet, since ketoacidosis is a serious medical issue.
If you can’t have cheese on clean keto, at least you can have bacon? Well, sort of. Traditional bacon contains those pesky sulfites from before, along with nitrates (aka another carcinogen), Hunnes says. One recent study found a link between nitrate consumption and mania by looking at both humans and rats.[12] And nitrates are a common migraine trigger — one study found that they can actually alter our oral bacteria, which is what can set off the migraines. [13]
You can usually use a mix of multiple flours to get a realistic texture in baking recipes. Combining flours and experimenting with your baking can lead to much lower net carb counts in recipes. We think these lemon poppyseed muffins (a mix of almond flour and flaxseed meal) make a great texture when combined with the fats from the heavy cream and butter.
Strawberries have also been found to improve blood sugar levels, reduce insulin levels, increase insulin sensitivity when compared to groups that did not consume berries. This suggests that the combination of consuming strawberries and following the keto diet may have particularly profound effects for those with type 2 diabetes and insulin resistance.
Never before has so much attention been given to the healing and beneficial effects of plants. Study after study is confirming that plants have medicinal power. Some, like turmeric, rival modern pharmaceuticals in their ability to fight infection and even treat cancer. With the added bonus of working holistically with your body without side-effects. Plants reduce inflammation, support detoxification and generally improve your health!
One of the best things about being on the keto diet is the emphasis on consuming good fats. In my case, that means indulging in nuts whenever I need a quick pick-me-up. However, it's important to note that not all nuts are created equal when you're on the keto diet. Since the emphasis with keto focuses on low carbs and high fats, you have to keep an eye on serving sizes as well as knowing which nuts bring the most bang for your buck as far as fats are concerned. (Say goodbye to peanuts.)
Low in fat and high in protein, cottage cheese has long been a staple for many dieters. However, people on the keto diet may want to be careful about eating cottage cheese in abundance. A single cup of small curd cottage cheese has roughly 8 grams of carbohydrates. Although it may be good to eat alone as a filling snack, be careful about pairing it with other foods that have traces of carbs, like avocados and nuts.

Low carb vegetables that are technically fruits. Tomatoes, tomatillos, avocados, pretty much any seed bearing vegetable… those “veggies” are fruits, botanically speaking. I’m not here to debate what a fruit or veggie is, but I won’t lie that it irks me just a little when I see people preach that you “can’t eat fruit on the keto diet” while diving face first into a pile of avocados or zucchini noodles. Maybe it’s the biologist in me (or maybe I’m just “that guy”), but you can and probably already are eating fruit on the keto diet.
Your macro goals on the keto diet will focus on eating minimal amounts of carbs, adequate amounts of protein (enough to maintain your lean body mass), and the rest of your nutritional needs will be met with fat. This includes fat from your body and fat from your plate. If your goal is fat loss, the fat from your dietary fat intake will be limited a bit to create a calorie deficit so your body fat stores can be burned for energy. That’s the basis of most keto calculators!

Just wanted to say thank you! I followed this recipe and if you would’ve served me this at a restaurant I wouldn’t know the difference between this and regular cheesecake! Some minor changes I did only because of the ingredients I had available were to use coconut flour vs almond flour, stevia packs (converted) vs. erythritol for both crust and batter, and just a small amount of almond milk to get the right consistency for the crust. For anyone who may need it, for every cup of almond flour I substituted 1/4 cup (or 2 ounces weighed) of coconut flour. Along with the almond milk, I increased the amount of butter used by about 1 tbsp since coconut flour really sucks up moisture. After that, I followed everything else listed including directions and was not disappointed. Although I used an incorrect pan type(only 2inch high 9inch solid baking pan) so I wasn’t the prettiest cheesecake, it was still delicious which is honestly all I cared about. I might also add that this is the first time I’ve ever baked cheesecake (or any type of baking) of any type, so for anyone who might think it’s difficult, give it a try!
Consumption of EPA and DHA in fish three times per week has been found to be a major predictor of better weight management because of improved insulin resistance (44).  Furthermore, consuming at least 2 servings of fish per week is associated with a decrease in various types of chronic disease including cancer and Alzheimer disease (45, 46).  It is also wise to use a high quality fish oil supplement to add more anti-inflammatory fish oils to your diet.
Just when you thought your midnight-snacking of shredded cheese could be considered a healthy habit thanks to keto… (You kid, you knew it was too good to be true all along.) Cheese in general is not recommended on clean keto or the Bulletproof Diet. Dairy proteins are among the worst offenders for allergies and inflammation. If your body doesn’t like casein, your immune system will attack every time you eat it. The reaction may be subtle and chronic, or it could trigger an autoimmune flare-up and other inflammatory conditions. Cheese also harbors tons of toxic mold from the animal’s diet.[11]
Maca is a kind of turnip from Peru. It is nicknamed “nature’s Viagra” for its libido boosting properties. Although it contains 60% NET carbs you only need a teaspoonful to give you a sweet tasting boost. A few grams of this superfood won’t take you out of ketosis. It’s adaptogenic, meaning it will boost your body, mind and mojo in multiple ways. Aloe Vera is a species of cactus related to the lily flower. It is antimicrobial, antibacterial and antifungal. It heals the gut and is used to successfully reduce the effects of radiation and stabilize cancerous tumors. It is a bit slimy to eat but can be added to salads and shakes and has zero carbs. This is a superhero in the plant kingdom and its zero carb status makes it perfect for keto.
Why is anti-inflammatory a good thing? Think about if you hurt your finger and it becomes inflamed. Acute inflammation can be a good thing and indicate your body is healing itself. Chronic inflammation means that a specific part of the body is no working well for long periods of time. If these are your gut organs, which deliver nutrients to your body and produce most of your serotonin, you are going to be performing at a vastly sub-optimal level.
This recipe is just amazing!!! Thank you for sharing! Quick question for you: I came up with 6 net carbs a serving (using Wellbee’s flour and taking all swerve carbs out if the equation). I see your nutrition facts list 3 but then a comment you wrote said 5. Any idea which it actually is for you and any guesses what the discrepancies could be?? Thanks again!
Even though star fruit is another fruit that some people don’t think to add to their grocery list, it’s worth a try if you’re on keto and want to satisfy your sweet tooth. A ½-cup serving of cubed star fruit contains about 2.6 g of net carbohydrates, plus 1.8 g of fiber and 2.6 g of sugar. It’s also low in calories and has 88 mg of potassium (1.9 percent DV) and 22.7 mg of vitamin C (38 percent DV).
Consuming a higher amount of fat is important on a ketogenic diet, and getting a variety of different fats is recommended.  I often get asked about potential snacks that someone can consume on the go.  As a source of primarily unsaturated (polyunsaturated and monounsaturated) fats, nuts and seeds can be a great choice to include in your daily menu.
If you have a cow’s milk intolerance, you might find goat’s milk can be a good replacement as it is much easier to digest and won’t upset your system. This is a great recipe if you fancy trying goat’s milk yogurt and it can be used in all the ways you would use other yogurts. You will find that this one is rather thin, so if you like your yogurt thicker, strain the mixture through a cloth and the result will be much better.
Low in fat and high in protein, cottage cheese has long been a staple for many dieters. However, people on the keto diet may want to be careful about eating cottage cheese in abundance. Coconuts are one of the top keto foods because they contain loads of medium-chain triglycerides (MCTs), easily-digestible fats that your liver instantly turns into ketones and burns for energy. Not only that, these coconut chips are a great source of fiber, which will help keep things moving along when you’re not loading your plate with too many carb-laden fruits and veggies.
The typical carb count in nuts and seeds is about 12.6 grams for every 28 grams at the highest and 3.5 grams for every 28 grams at the lowest. You’re probably thinking: that’s pretty high, but most of this carbohydrate content comes in the form of fiber, which body cannot digest. It passes through your intestines without being digested and goes into bulking up your stool for easier passage when you answer Mother Nature’s Call.
However, the need to eliminate carbohydrate-rich foods does not mean that all fruits must be removed from your daily diet. In fact, several high-fat, low-carb fruits, like coconut and avocado, are staples of the ketogenic diet. Ultimately, finding good keto fruits just involves identifying fruits with low carb content, so that you can consume healthy, sweet foods without affecting ketosis.

Thank you so much for the above information. Really very helpful for people like me. Just started Keto 3 weeks ago, I still get confused on my protein consumption and what vegetables have high carb content. This is by far the best “diet” I’ve been on as I feel I can go on forever and I’m not missing anything I actually eat what I want. I eat when I’m hungry and stop when I’m full, just extra cautious what I put in my body.
Most fruits are high in carbs and a natural source of sugar. This means that delicious, sweet fruits like mangoes, pomegranates, lychee, pears, kiwi, bananas and even apples may not make great choices if you're trying to stick with a ketogenic diet. Not being able to have apples on the keto diet may surprise you — after all, apples have such a good reputation for being healthy!
So, how do we ensure enough super-plant based nutrition on keto? Fortunately there are loads of low carb vegetables and keto friendly fruit you can choose from! Let’s start with low carb vegetables - specifically the green ones! The green color in plants is called chlorophyll. Plants use chlorophyll to capture sunlight and turn it into energy. Chlorophyll protects the body from cancer and cleanses the liver. Amazingly, our bodies can also use chlorophyll inside our mitochondria. This is why green juices, made fresh or from powders, give us a rapid natural energy boost. Green leafy plants like Kale, Spinach and Collard Greens reduce the risk of cancer and many other diseases. Make sure you eat your greens on keto!

The consensus is that the Carbs shown on nutritional labels for yogurt containers are extremely misleading. The fermentation process brought on by the active cultures in yogurt, consume roughly half of the stated carbs. The nutritional labeling system REQUIRES food manufacturers to build the label based on the pre-cooking (or fermenting in this case) stage of the food.

There are quite a few flours out there made from nuts and seeds that can be used to substitute wheat flour. Gravies, sauces, low carb baked goods… it’s absolutely insane how creative people have gotten with low carb flours. Breads, cookies, you name it. I would recommend sticking to whole foods and wait to venture into baked goods territory. Get comfortable with what you can and can’t eat, get into ketosis, and then start experimenting with ketofied versions of your favorite foods.
